 Great White
Back to the Rhythm
Shrapnel Records
It must have been difficult for Great White to release new material after the devastating nightclub fire at their Rhode Island show in 2003 that killed approximately 100, including one of their own, guitarist Ty Longley. However, creating new music can aid the healing process, and while some might consider it a ballsy move, it should have been expected that vocalist Jack Russell and guitarist Mark Kendall would eventually move forward.
Celebrating Great White’s 25th anniversary by reuniting the original line-up for the first time in eight years, Back to the Rhythm
has a bar-friendly, classic rock vibe to it, with the bluesy, soulful
melodies and hip-shaking grooves that put the band on the map in the
‘80s. Dark mid-tempo rocker “Cold World” harkens back to 1985’s Shot in the Dark, and the melancholy “Was it the Night?” picks up right where 1992’s Psycho City
left off. Another very old-school sounding track, the upbeat “Still
Hungry” is sure to satisfy the palates of fans craving more classic
Great White. These sharks haven't swum away from their roots; they've
continued doing what they do best, and it’s good to have them back.
