Dinosaur Jr. are back. Today the trio announced There Near, their first full-length since 2021's Sweep It Into Space, due August 28. It's the band's sixth album since J Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph reunited the original lineup in 2005, and that reunion has now quietly run longer than the band's entire first life across the '80s and '90s.
The story this time starts with an amp. Mascis built much of There Near around a '70s Mesa Boogie, the vintage rig he ties to the gnarled, overdriven roar of the band's late-'80s run, and that reach back toward an older tone shapes everything around it. The trio tracked most of the record themselves at Bisquiteen, Mascis' home studio in Amherst, Massachusetts.
There Near arrives August 28. Physical editions include a Metal Edge exclusive pressing limited to 500 copies on purple and white splash vinyl, available to pre-order now and shipping on street date.
The band will take the new material on the road this fall, with a run that opens October 9 in Las Vegas and winds down the West Coast before cutting through the Mountain West and into Texas. Stef Chura supports throughout, and Seattle gets a two-night stand at the Neptune in late October. The trek wraps November 7 in New Orleans.
