Black Gives Way to Blue is one of hard rock’s greatest comebacks. When it arrived in 2009, it had been 14 years since Alice in Chains had put out an album, and seven since lead vocalist Layne Staley tragically passed away. The LP is a fitting tribute to the grunge godfathers’ fallen bandmate, highlighting Alice in Chains’ penchant for Seattle storm-cloud-gloom riffage (“Check My Brain”) and ink-black balladry, while also ushering in a new era with bluesy-voiced singer-guitarist William DuVall.
