Has there ever been a metal supergroup as instantly, profoundly weird as Fantômas? Comprising current and former members of Mr. Bungle, Melvins and Slayer, the band crafted a self-titled debut packed with white noise, mock operatics, Spaghetti Western sludge, amp-exploding guitar doom, and the occasional thrash beat courtesy of Dave Lombardo. Above all this, Mike Patton delivers a series of percussively onomatopoeic, distortion-blown vocal exercises more becoming of a beatboxer or an Inuit throat-singer than a traditional metal frontman. Pressed to silver vinyl for its 25th anniversary, Fantômas is still a ragingly peculiar spin.
