Megadeth’s first album of the Nineties just may be the pinnacle of the technical thrashers’ storied career. Vocalist-guitarist Dave Mustaine is in fine, acerbic form as he perma-sneers through songs about nuclear winters, government cover-ups, holy wars and heartbreak. Incoming Cacophony shredder Marty Friedman injected “Tornado of Souls” with one of metal’s most cosmically jaw-dropping solos of all time, though the full band put on a virtuosic, thrash-expanding clinic the whole way through. The platinum-selling Rust in Peace is a progressive, political and forever-potent atom bomb that needs to be heard to be believed.
