Meshuggah fully embraced chaos with their third release, a percussive and progressively mind-warping juggernaut that toned down the thrashiest aspects of the Swedish outfit’s earliest efforts in favor of the kind of djent-judded extremity that would go on to inspire a billion bands in the years to come. But in 1998, the irregular, jazz-fractured brutality behind songs like “New Millenium Cyanide Christ” was completely alien to most. Meshuggah were writing their own rhythmic language one song at a time, ultimately redefining how metal fans grooved to music forevermore.
