Kaleidoscope is the especially apt title to Siouxie Sioux’s third album with her Banshees. Released in 1980, the record propels the band towards an increasingly sophisticated, enigmatic and prismatic fusion of post-punk, goth and anthemic rock. Drummer Budgie finds an exquisite tribal rhythm through blackstar-shimmering club fave “Happy House,” while Siouxsie’s elastic tenor conjures overwhelming feelings of confusion through the dissociative personality split at the heart of their thumping “Christine.” Dark character portraits and colorful arrangements abound on this Banshees classic.
