Hypnotize was System of a Down’s fifth LP, and second album of 2005, following Mesmerize. But this isn’t merely a collection of leftovers, but rather a feverishly-inspired sister set of sociopolitical, darkly melodic and expressively experimental anthems that proved SOAD were in a particularly prolific headspace in the mid Aughts. The band’s last album to date, its excitable explosion of scissor-beated thrash, passionately-sung alt ballads and jazz-scatted dance-metal made for an exquisite feast before the famine.
