Even amid a wildly adventurous and completely chaotic discography, there’s a freakishly unique quality to Dillinger Escape Plan’s Irony is a Dead Scene EP. The New Jersey noiseniks were between full-time vocalists in the early Aughts, and ended up snagging musical hero and mentor Mike Patton to hit the sessions as a stop-gap measure. Naturally, his presence juices up DEP’s Bungle-iest tendencies — see the way he laces screams and sexy sneers into the metallically judding samba of “Pig Latin” — but the band likewise push Patton towards blunt-form extremity. An exquisitely experimental math-metal curio that finds two entities freaking out together at the height of their powers.
