Mastodon have officially announced Marrow Deep, their long-awaited ninth studio album and first full-length since 2021's Hushed and Grim. The record lands August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings, opening a new chapter for the Atlanta band after five years away from the studio.PRE-ORDER MARROW DEEP

Leading the announcement is "Snakes For Dinner," the second song unveiled from the album following June's "Your Ghost Again." Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme guests on the track, marking his first collaboration with Mastodon since his appearance on "Colony of Birchmen" from 2006's Blood Mountain. Homme turns up in the song's new video as well.

Written during one of the most turbulent periods in the band's history, Marrow Deep draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, threading together grief, mortality, and the unseen forces that shape every life. Crushing riffs and sudden shifts in tempo push against passages of open, melodic space, the sound of a band chasing catharsis rather than resolution. It's the first Mastodon album to feature guitarist Nick Johnston as a full-time member, with keyboardist João Nogueira coloring the record throughout. Mastodon co-produced at their West End Sound studio in Atlanta with Patrik Berger and Kurt Ballou before handing mixing duties to Andrew Scheps.

The album emerges from the wake of The Mastodon in the Room, the band's deeply personal short film examining the loss of founding guitarist Brent Hinds and the emotions surrounding the end of a partnership that lasted more than two decades. Marrow Deep carries those wounds directly into the songs, with "Your Ghost Again" standing as one of its emotional centerpieces.

"Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we've got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us," bassist Troy Sanders said. "That's a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice." He added that the chemistry has brought back the same excitement that fueled Mastodon's earliest rehearsals, with every member eager to push the band forward.

Mastodon will support Marrow Deep on The Poisonous Weapons Tour, which begins September 16 in Orlando before wrapping October 24 at Sick New World Dallas. Deafheaven and Alcest join the band throughout the North American run.
